Terrorists Ambush CRPF Convoy, Officer Martyred

Srinagar: A CRPF officer was killed while a trooper sustained injuries when terrorists attacked a small convoy of paramilitary forces on Srinagar-Jammu highway near Pantha Chowk on outskirts of Srinagar on Saturday evening. The security forces holed-up the terrorists in a school building and engaged in a gun battle. About 20 staff members were evacuated from the school building. The exchange of fire is still under way. The police sources, however, said the security forces was planning to suspend the combat operation in the wake of darkness and likely to resume it Sunday morning. Official sources said two to three terrorists carrying AK-47 rifles attacked a CRPF vehicle, which was part of the force's 29 battalion, near DPS School at Pantha Chowk at around 6:00 pm, injuring assistant sub inspector Shab Shukla and driver constable Nisar Ahmad. The injured were shifted to army's 92 Base Hospital in Badamibagh where the ASI succumbed to his injuries, an official said. The condition of the driver is stated to be critical. In a statement, LeT spokesman Abdullah Ghazanavi claimed responsibility for the attack. After the attack, army, SOG and CRPF cordoned off the area and launched a manhunt to nab the assailants. Sources said the security forces established contact with terrorists who took shelter in the nearby DPS School after attacking the CRPF vehicle at Pantha chowk in the evening and opened fire on the search party.
