NIA Custody Of 4 Hurriyat Leaders Extended, 3 Sent To Judicial Custody4 August 2017
Srinagar: A special court of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in New Delhi on Friday extended the police custody of four of the seven detained Hurriyat Conference leaders and sent the three others to judicial custody. 'The custody of Altaf Shah, Peer Saifullah, Mehraj ud Din Kalwal and Nayeem Khan was extended up to August 14, 2017, by the court,' said a member of Committee for Release of Political Prisoners (CRPP). The seven arrested leaders - Peer Saifullah, Altaf Ahmad Shah alias Altaf Fantosh, Muhammad Akbar Khanday alias Ayaz, Mehraj ud Din Kalwal of Syed Ali Geelani-led Tehreek-e-Hurriyat, Nayeem Ahmad Khan (National Front), advocate Aftab Hilali Shah alias Shahid ul Islam (Hurriyat Conference-M) and Farooq Ahmad Dar alias Bitta Karate were presented before the NIA court in Patiala House court complex today in the forenoon. The incarcerated Hurriyat leaders are being represented by a group of three lawyers who work with the CRPP. Their 10-day remand granted earlier by the NIA court had ended on Thursday. 'The court was presided over by OP Saini, as the permanent presidium was absent today,' the member of CRPP said. He said that the NIA 'did not seek custody of Ayaz, Karate and Islam'. 'They were remanded to judicial custody up to September 1,' he said. The accused have been charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. 'There was an argument in the court after NIA refused to show us the application moved by it before the judge against our clients,' the CRPP said. 'Later, the judge allowed the court to proceed without showing us the application.' 'NIA Act is not a normal criminal law,' he explained. 'Custody (of the accused) is extended (without much argument) if the NIA seeks it.' The member informed that all the detainees undergo medical check-up after every 24 hours. He said that medicines and other necessary items are being made available by NIA to the Hurriyat leaders. He further added that the families of the Hurriyat leaders are in contact with the lawyers. 'A few family members of Altaf Shah had come to Delhi today and met him,' he said.
