A joint team of 44 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) of Army and SOG of Jammu and Kashmir Police this evening launched a cordon-and- search operation at village Batmuran following specific inputs about the presence of two militants. Sources said that they had information about presence of Tanvir Ahmad Bhat of Batmuran and a foreigner hiding in the village. As security forces launched the searches, they were fired upon by the hiding militants, leading to a fierce encounter. The firing has stopped but the security forces have strengthened the cordon around the village so that the militants may not flee. One of the militants is, however, believed to be dead and search for the other is going on.
