Panchayat Polls From Feb 15: CM Tells Guv

25 December 2017

Jammu: Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti met Governor N N Vohra at the Raj Bhavan here on Monday. During their half hour long meeting, Chief Minister informed the Governor about several important matters in regard to which the Cabinet had taken decisions a few days ago. She also informed about her government's decision to commence Panchayat elections from 15 February 2018. Polls to 4,098 panchayats are to be held after every five years. The term of the last panchayats expired in 2016 making the fresh polls long overdue. The absence of panchayats not only prevents the decentralisation of power, but also blocks the money budgetted for them. The Panchayat polls to be held in last year June were deferred after the uprising triggered five-month shutdown in the Valley. Later the government announced to hold the polls in March-April, only to be postponed again. The Governor re-iterated his concern about the vital importance of ensuring prompt redressal of public grievances and for the entire administrative system to function in a truly transparent and accountable manner, to promote public welfare.
