20 March 2018

Jammu: The alleged mastermind in the rape and murder of an eight-year-old nomadic girl, which had sparked a major controversy, surrendered before the Jammu and Kashmir police on Tuesday. Sanji Ram, 60, a retired government employee, had gone underground after his name cropped up during an investigation by the crime branch. 'Yes, he (Sanji Ram) has surrendered. His son too has been arrested from Uttar Pradesh', said Dr Shesh Paul Vaid, director general of police, Jammu and Kashmir. The development follows an assurance by Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti that justice would be done. More than six people, including two special police officers, a juvenile and a cop, has been arrested in the case. One of the SPOs, Deepak Khajuria, was part of the police team searching for the girl. The body of the girl was found near a jungle in Hiranagar of Kathua district on January 17, a week after she went missing from Kota village. More cover-up was found later. Investigators have alleged that head constable Tilak Raj had washed the blood- and mud-stained clothes of the child before sending them forensic tests. Hindu Ekta Manch, a local organisation in Kathua, has been spearheading the demand for a CBI probe saying they don't trust the crime branch. This had earlier snowballed into a major controversy after two BJP minister joined a rally by the Manch. 'Mastermind of rape and murder case surrenders before Crime Branch. Hope this will bring some solace to your departed soul angel,' tweeted the ruling Peoples Democratic Party.
