Army Man Killed, 4 Hurt In Suspected BAT Attack In Poonch

Mendhar: An army man was killed and four others including an officer injured in suspected Border Action Team (BAT) attack by Pakistani troops along the Line of Control (LoC) in Krishna Ghati (KG) sector of Poonch district on Tuesday. Jammu-based defence spokesperson Colonel N N Joshi said Pakistani troops breached border ceasefire and resorted to unprovoked firing and mortar shelling on army positions in KG sector in Poonch at 7.15 am. He said the army men deployed along the LoC strongly and effectively returned the fire. During the exchange of fire, a BAT team already waiting near fence reportedly attacked the army border outpost and inflicted severe injuries to army men including an officer, sources said. The injured army men identified as Lieutenant Kallmputi Bhargava,23, Naib Subedar Mahlya Vikas Motilal, 43, Subedar Sakunday Sameer Kashi Nath, 37, Naik Dhumal Sandeep, 35, and Sepoy Mastpuray Subham, 21, were airlifted to army hospital at Udhampur. One of the critically injured trooper identified as Sepoy Mastpuray Subham succumbed to injuries in the hospital. The deceased trooper belonged to Konerwadi, Parbhani, Maharashtra and is survived by mother. Sources said heavy shelling continued for about an hour. 'However, intermittent fire continued till afternoon.' They said the killing of army man and injuries to four others in reported BAT attack has once again increased tension along the LoC in the State. There has been a surge in border ceasefire violations this year. With the killing of the army man, the death toll of army man and civilians killed in cross-border firing in the State has risen to 27. Among the dead include 13 security men and 14 civilians.
