Mortar Shelling, Gunfire Across LoC In Uri

Baramulla: After the week-long shelling and gunfire across the International Border in Jammu, the armies of India and Pakistan exchanged heavy gunfire across the Line of Control in north Kashmir's Uri on Wednesday night. The exchange of fire broke out in the night and Indian Army claimed that Pakistani forces violated the ceasefire and targeted Indian Army posts in Kamalkote near Maryan village along the Line of Control at around 11pm. An army source said that the exchange of firing continued for one hour. He said that Pakistani forces not only targeted army posts but also used heavy mortar to attack the civilian population in the area. He said the fire was retaliated. The civilian people of Kamalkote and Maryan village said that they heard intense gunfight along the LoC in the night. They said that thankfully there was no loss of life or property in the civilian area, however panic was created in the entire sector. The civilian residents said that both the armies targeted each other in the night due to which they couldn't sleep the entire night. They said their children were crying due to the sound of mortar shelling and gunfire. Army sources said that reinforcements have been rushed to the area and an army helicopter is monitoring the situation from the air. Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Uri Syeed Javid Ahmad told Kashmir Reader that there is a lull since the night along the LoC and confirmed that there was no civilian death or injury in the area. He said the situation is now normal in the area. Meanwhile, the army on Thursday claimed to have foiled an infiltration bid in Keran sector in Kupwara district. Army sources said that soldiers posted along the LoC in Gogledar detected some suspicious movement on Thursday morning. When they challenged the group of imtruders, they fired on the army, which was retaliated and a brief gunfight ensued. Taking advantage of the fog, the 'heavily armed militants' retreated.
