Soldier, Civilian Killed In Separate Militant Incidents In Kashmir

Srinagar: One Army soldier and a woman were killed in two separate incidents of militant violence on Friday in Kashmir valley, according to the police. A police official said a brief encounter broke out between militants and the Army at Kralgund area of Kupwara's Handwara early in the morning. 'One soldier suffered critical bullet wounds in the firing. He later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital,' said the police. The Army's 32 Rashtriya Rifles was a part of a cordon-and-search-operation at Kachlu village when the gunfight broke out. In north Kashmir's Bandipora, militants managed to escape from a cordon operation immediately after a contact was established on Friday morning in a village. The operation was called off in a Hajin village later, said the police. In a separate incident, the police said suspected militants shot dead a 38-year-old woman at Pulwama's Drabgam area. The victim, identified as Shameema, wife of Ali Mohd Bhat, was near his parental home at Drabgam village on Friday afternoon when she was fired upon by unknown gunmen. The police said a preliminary investigations suggested that militants shot the woman.
