Srinagar: Security forces today gunned down five militants in an operation in Qazigund area of Kulgam district, 76 km south of Srinagar city, while a civilian was killed and 21 injured in clashes near the encounter site. The gunfight started at Chowgam village around 3 am, hours after a cordon and search operation was launched. 'We had specific inputs regarding militants' presence in the area,' a senior police official said, adding that the evacuation of civilians took a couple of hours before the gunfight started. He said the militants fired from a house in a bid to escape and the encounter concluded around noon as the house where the militants were holed up was blown apart using explosives. The bodies of the slain militants, all locals, were handed over to the next of kin. They were identified as Gulzar Ahmad Padder, Faisal Ahmad Rather, Zahid Ahmad Mir and Zahoor Ahmad Lone of Kulgam and Masroor Molvi, alias Abu Darda, of Anantnag. The police said the militants belonged to Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) and Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT). 'All were active militants and were involved in a number of terror activities, including killing of policemen.' He said Padder, who had been active for over a year, was an associate of Altaf Kachroo, an HM commander killed recently by security forces. Clashes erupted around the encounter site despite suspension of mobile Internet, leaving one civilian dead. The deceased has been identified as Rauf Ahmad Ganie of Anchidora, Anantnag.
