Dozens Get Elected Unopposed In First Phase Of Municipal Polls In Kashmir1 October 2018
Srinagar: -As many as 69 candidates were declared elected unopposed from various municipal councils and committees in Jammu and Kashmir due to boycott call or non participation of other contestants. Surprisingly, two major regional political parties including National Conference (NC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had already announced their boycott of these elections. Communist Party of India (CPI), Bhujan Samaj Party (BSP) and other smaller parties too have boycotted the municipal and Panchyat elections in the state leaving the field open for Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP), Indian National Congress (INC) and Independent candidates open for electoral process. The candidates from Achhabal, Baramulla, Bandipora, Devsar, Handwara, Kokernag, Kupwara, Khansahib and Kulgam were declared elected after the scrutiny of papers was completed for the first phase of urban local bodies elections. According to official sources, eight candidates who filed their nomination papers from Devsar were declared elected unopposed as no other contestant filed his- her papers. Similalry, seven candidates were elected for the seven committee wards from Khansahib town. In Kulgam, a single candidate was elected to municipal council from five wards after he had filed his nomination paper from each ward while out of 13 municipal wards eight candidates were elected unopposed in Kokernag. In Frisal area not a single candidate had filed nomination papers for 13 municipal wards while five were declared elected uncontested. They said in some cases only one nomination was received from a particular ward and in other cases, a single candidate was contesting from several wards simultaneously. Out of 21 wards In Baramulla municipal council, only six nomination papers were received and were declared elected unopposed while in Kupwara two contestants were declared elected unopposed, six in Handwara, and one in Bandipora. The poll process for the first phase of election like filing of nomination papers, scrutiny and withdrawal of the papers has been completed.
