Kashmir Parts Shut On JRL's Call10 October 2018

Srinagar: A complete shutdown was Wednesday observed in various parts of Kashmir against the conduct of ongoing Municipal polls in the state. The shutdown call was given by the Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik. All the shops and business establishments remained closed in the poll bound areas while as the traffic was also thin on the roads. The phase two elections according to Director General of Police (DGP Dilbagh Singh passed off peacefully, saying that the two phases of the ongoing ULB polls culminated peacefully. Tight security was put in place in the poll bound areas to ensure peaceful atmosphere for the voters to cast their ballots, police officials said, adding that no untoward incident took place through the day. Meanwhile, witnesses said that the restrictions were also put in place at several Old city areas during which the commuters were not being allowed to pass through the restriction bound areas. Besides, the mobile internet speed was once again reduced to 2g today. The services continued to remain reduced when the report was last filed. The second phase of four-phased ULB elections culminated today. Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), J&K, Shaleen Kabra had said that in the 2nd Phase of Municipal Polls-2018 voting will take place at 544 polling stations across the State tomorrow on 10 October 2018. The polling time, he said will be from 6.00 am to 4.00 pm. He had said 270 polling stations have been designated for voting in Kashmir Division and 274 in Jammu Division. The CEO had also said 1029 candidates are in the fray for 263 Municipal Wards including 49 in Kashmir and 214 in Jammu, going to polls in Phase-II. He said 881 candidates are in the fray in Jammu division and 148 in Kashmir division for Phase-II. The voting for the second phase began at 6 am here amid tight security arrangements.
