Clashes In Several Srinagar Areas After Friday Prayers

Srinagar: Scores of people including policeman and media persons were injured as intense clashes rocked several areas of the Srinagar city here after congregational Jummat-ul-Vida prayers. Reports said that as soon as the Friday prayers ended at Jamia Masjid, hundreds of them assembled outside the main gate of central mosque and took out a rally amid pro-freedom slogans towards Khanyar. However, the situation turned hostile after protesters clashed with the police and paramilitary forces deployed at Khwaja Bazar area. Police lobbed dozens of tear smoke shells and also fired pellets to disperse the protesters. However, the agitating youth offered stiff resistance and engaged the deployment in pitched battles which, according to reports, lasted for several hours. Reports said that scores of people including police personnel and some media persons were injured in the ensuing clashes between the two sides. Despite being reproved by the separatist leaders not to carry flags of Islamic State, the protesters holding flags of different militant outfits including that of ISIS, JeM, Hizb and other groups amid pro-militant slogans marched towards Khanyar. Witnesses said that the agitating youth also damaged vehicles parked along roadside to enforce shutdown thus creating total chaos and confusion in the area. Clashes between the government forces and protesters later spread other adjoining areas with police in order to maintain law and order used force to disperse them. A videographer of a local news channel, Khan Yasrab was injured while performing his professional duties. Witnesses said that Khan who suffered injuries in his leg was later removed to hospital for treatment. Similarly, many civilians and police personal were injured during clashes in the area.
