Srinagar: The midday congregational Friday prayers were offered at the historic Jamia Masjid, the largest mosque in the Kashmir valley, making it the first time since Article 370 was abrogated in August this year. The congregational prayers at Jamia Masjid in Srinagar's old city were led by Imam Hai. Several hundred people offered the prayers. It was for the first time since Article 370 was abrogated that Friday prayers were offered at the mosque. The mosque had remained under a lockdown for nearly three months in the aftermath of the abrogation as restrictions were imposed in the old city and police and paramilitary personnel had sealed off the mosque. The restrictions were removed from the mosque by the district administration last month but the mosque administration had refused to offer prayers and placed conditions that the deployment of the police from the mosque vicinity should be removed. The prayers were resumed at the mosque this week and the first Friday prayers - a midday congregational event - was offered today while a large presence of police and paramilitary personnel remained outside the mosque. Immediately after the prayers ended, a small protest was held near the gate of the mosque as demonstrators held placards and raised slogans. The demonstration ended peacefully.
