Video Of ADC Baramulla Thrashing People To Enforce Lockdown Triggers Outrage

Srinagar: A day after north Kashmir's Baramulla town witnessed a huge rush of people, Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Baramulla Mohammad Ahsan Mir in a viral video was seen thrashing people with a stick to enforce corona-curfew. The video triggered massive outrage among the netizens who urged the Lieutenant Governor led administration to take strong action against the said officer. The 53-second video was shared hundreds of times by people across all social media platforms. One of the social media user, Rather Shabir wrote on his Twitter handle that 'Beating up a woman on the street with lathis and abusing people is not the way to enforce the curfew. It is completely unacceptable and the law prevails for everybody. The administration should take cognizance and take immediate action against ADC Baramulla (sic).' Another netizen Shahid Ayoub demanded suspension of the officer. There were some social media users who posted contrasting pictures of the ADC and SSP Baramulla, who pleads before a lady purportedly to not venture outside unnecessarily. The gesture of the police officer was praised by many on social media. A netizen, Sameen Khan, while sharing the two pictures of the ADC and SSP Baramulla said 'both pictures, saw these two incidents that took place today, on an online news portal, so thought of sharing. Both officers implementing lockdown in their own ways,' he said. 'You rarely get to see these type of pictures these days, where the topmost police officer of the district is seen with folded hands requesting a lady to follow the COVID curfew and return home. My hometown Baramulla is lucky to have @bhatray as the SSP (sic),' wrote a netizen, Tejinder Singh Sodhi on his Twitter handle. Meanwhile, ADC Mohammad Ahsan told Rising Kashmir that the people who can be seen on the video were asymptomatic COVID patients. 'I stopped them with no intention of harassing them.' 'All those who are seen in the video were asymptomatic COVID patients and they were roaming freely in the market. The video has been misinterpreted on social media,' he said. While a press statement from Deputy Commissioner Baramulla office stated that Mir along with concerned officers took an inspection at several locations in the district during which he found that some persons were unnecessarily roaming in the market thereby posing threat to themselves as well to others. 'Taking a strong note of it, the ADC dealt with them sternly and warned them to follow govt advisories in letter and spirit,' it said. He urged people to cooperate with the administration and stated that there is nothing more important than precious human lives and administration can take any measure to safeguard public health, the statement said. Hours after the video of ADC Baramulla went viral, the divisional administration Kashmir has sought a factual report from the Deputy Commissioner Baramulla on the incident. In an order, Additional Commissioner Kashmir Qazi Sarwar sought submission of the factual report in the context of the viral video of Additional Deputy Commissioner, Baramulla. 'Apropos to the subject cited above, I am directed to request you to kindly send the factual report viz-a-viz the context of the situation and the content of the video to this office as soon as possible,' the order read. Notably, a video of ADC Baramulla went viral earlier today in which he was seen beating men and women with a stick. The officer has come under severe criticism with people demanding action against him.
