Overview of the state

The erstwhile state of Jammu & Kashmir within India earlier consisted of three main parts: the Kashmir Valley, Jammu and Ladakh. The part under Pakistan's occupation can be divided into the so-called Azaad Kashmir and the region of Gilgit-Baltistan, both of which are dealt with in other sections. In October 2019, the Indian portion of the state was bifurcated into two parts - one part comprising the Jammu region & the Kashmir Valley called the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir and the other comprising the erstwhile districts of Ladakh and Kargil into the Union Territory of Ladakh.
