Militant Killed In Shopian Encounter14 March 2021
Shopian: A militant was killed on Sunday in an encounter with security forces in Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said. Security forces launched a cordon and search operation on Saturday in Rawalpora area of the district following information about presence of militants there, a police official said. He said the search operation turned into an encounter after militants opened fire on the security forces who retaliated. After an overnight lull, the exchange of fire resumed this morning in which one militant has been killed, the official said. He said arms, ammunition and other incriminating material were recovered from the scene of the encounter. The gunfight was triggered when the militants opened fire foring the security forces to retaliate and commence the 24-hour-long anti-militancy operation. 'We also recovered a US-made M-4 Carbine and 36 armour-piercing bullets from the encounter site,' the official added. The army recovered US made M4 Carbine, three magazines, 36 armour-piercing rounds and Rs 9,600 from the encounter site in Rawalpora, Shopian. As soon as the news about the killing of militants spread in the area, a number of youth pelted stones at the forces. During the clashes two youth received pellet injuries while a policeman was also wounded in the process. Sources said that two youths sustained pelted injuries, one among them suffered pellet injuries in his eye. 'The fierce clashes also left a policeman wounded. All the injured were evacuated to the nearest hospital.' Talking to Rising Kashmir medical superintendent, district hospital Shopian, Mohammad Ismail said that two youth and a policeman received injuries and were brought to the hospital. 'Two youths received pellet injuries and one among them suffered pellet injury in right eye. He was referred to SMHS hospital Srinagar for specialized treatment. The injured policeman suffered an injury on head after he was hit by a stone, and is now provided treatment at the hospital, said Ismail. The injured policeman has been identified as head constable Nazir Ahmad. Following the gunfight authorities blocked Internet service in Shopian district as a 'precautionary measure'.
